Everything Is Borrowed

We use language we did not invent. Our words were old when our parents learned them.

We drive on roads paved before we were born.

We are surrounded by the accumulated labour of people who are no longer here.

The present moment bears the signature of a goodwill that preceded us and anticipated our arrival.

It’s as if we are at the crest of the wave of life, each moment inheriting our lives anew, the past just a memory.

It is all borrowed, held lightly, and then let go.

Our role, then, is to join forces with the aggregate goodwill which anticipated us.

So that the Inheritance may grow.

In this way, we join the forerunners.
