The Fruits of Our Labour

What is it that we are building, collectively?

What is our collective destiny?

The trajectory of culture and technology can be thought of like a plant.

Currently, it is a plant growing rapidly, with little concern for what type of plant it should be, or what fruit it should produce.

We don’t seem to be consciously directing our efforts.

Rather, the main goal appears to be to grow faster and faster, in an arbitrary direction.

Our pursuit of science and technology is not embedded within a tradition of how to live well.

Religions have historically addressed this need. But the problem that many have with religion, is that it bundles practices for how to live with unverifiable truth claims. Many people are not willing to affirm such claims.

We should therefore shift away from dogma and orthodoxy, towards orthopraxy, in our religious traditions.

Right action, over right belief.

In order to shape our collective destiny into something fruitful, we should embed our building and enterprising within a rich tradition of what it means to be alive, and then do our best to live well from that place.

May we grow the wisdom necessary to wield the power we already have.
